RUUT VEENHOVEN

Professor Emeritus at Erasmus University Rotterdam and Director of the World Database of Happiness

Dutch sociologist and a pioneer and world authority on the scientific study of happiness, He has shown that happiness can be used a reliable measure to assess progress in societies, which was one of the sources of inspiration for the United Nations to adopt happiness measures as a holistic approach to development. He is also founding director of The Journal of Happiness Studies.

"The determinants of happiness can be sought at two levels: external conditions and internal processes. If we manage to identify the circumstances in which people tend to be happy, we can create similar conditions for everyone."
