SAAMDU CHETRI

Director of the Gross National Happiness Centre, Bhutan

Saamdu holds a PhD in Commerce, Master in Commerce and Post-Graduation Certificate in HRM. He has several years experience in socio-economic development working as Bhutanese Head for bilateral development agencies at Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Helvetas. During this period, he was a member of a number of development programs in and outside Bhutan. He has drafted over 60 reports, three annual programmes, and carried out many consultancies for organizations like UNDP, UNCDF, and Helvetas. His experiences and expertise range from rural development, microfinance, teaching, research, to management of projects and administration. In 2012, Saamdu was given the heroic task of developing, building and instituting a Centre for Gross National Happiness in Bumthang, Central Bhutan. He has several publications to his credit and many interviews on radio, TV and magazines around the world. He has travelled to many countries in Asia, Europe, US, Australia, and Africa sharing the seeds of Gross National Happiness, the development paradigm of Bhutan since 1970s.

The concept of Gross National Happiness consists of four pillars: Fair socio-economic development (better education and health), conservation and promotion of a vibrant culture, environmental protection and good governance.
